The old parliament building is made of wood.
An earthquake destroyed Wellington in 1855. But after the quake, the ground in the harbour region lifted 1,50 m. This new ground was used to build the capital of New Zealand. Das alte Parlamentsgebäude ist komplett aus Holz, auch wenn es anders zu sein scheint. Ein Erdbeben hat im Jahre 1855 fast die ganze Stadt zerstört. Andererseits hob sich bei dem Beben der Meersboden im Hafengebiet um 1,50 m an und schuf so Platz für die 1865 gegründete Hauptstadt Neuseelands.
